Understanding and Treating Snoring

Snoring is caused by restricted airflow at the back of the mouth, leading to tissue vibrations, especially of the soft palate. It affects both genders but is twice as common in men. Around 20% of couples sleep apart due to snoring.

Common Causes Include:

Genetics, age, gender, and weight (fat around throat narrows the airway)

Smoking

Alcohol (relaxes throat muscles and disrupts sleep)

Sleeping on the back (increases snoring), while side-sleeping reduces it

Treatment Options:

Weight-loss programs

Avoiding alcohol and certain medications

Changing sleep posture

Surgical procedures

Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs) – Custom dental appliances worn at night to reposition the jaw forward, keeping the airway open and reducing snoring significantly. These devices also improve sleep quality and oxygen intake.

MADs are especially beneficial for patients whose sleep apnoea or snoring is primarily caused by tongue obstruction. At Dr Nuala Cagney Dental, we are proud to offer this specialised service. Dr Nuala Cagney has undergone advanced training in the design, fitting, and management of mandibular advancement devices, ensuring patients receive expert care tailored to their individual needs.

If you suffer from snoring or mild to moderate sleep apnoea and are seeking a more comfortable alternative to CPAP, contact us today to arrange a consultation.
